An Invitation to Journey in Faith
"Jesus turned, and saw them following, and said to them, “What do you seek?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come and see.”"
John 1: 38-39a
Become a Catholic
St Benedict's Parish welcomes you as you seek to enrich your faith life and explore what is involved in becoming a Catholic Christian. We share and celebrate this journey with you, through a process called "The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults." (RCIA)
We offer the RCIA journey through a series of sessions held mainly on Thursdays throughout the Calendar year. You are also invited to join us at any of the Masses anytime throughout the week.
Join us on a journey of exploring the Catholic faith. Just drop us an email and we will be in touch about this journey.
Don’t worry, you won’t be on your own. Every person’s faith journey is unique and as a parish we will journey alongside you in exploring and committing to the Catholic Faith.

"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep ... I am the good shepherd; I know my own and my own know me, as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep."
John 10: 11, 14-15
What is RCIA?
Catholicism is a way of life and becoming Catholic is a journey in faith. RCIA is a process, which has roots in the Early Church. It’s a journey of preparation to receive the Sacraments of the Church. It seeks, however, to do more than simply give information. Becoming Catholic involves entering into relationship with Jesus Christ and his community of God’s people.
Our belief is that you will enjoy a deeper relationship with God as you become acquainted with members of St Benedict’s and the Church throughout the world. You will no doubt begin to notice how God has invited and has brought you to this point. At the same time, members of the parish are praying for you, attending sessions with you, and sharing the joy of the faith with you in this process.
The Rite points to conversion as a “spiritual journey.” It is centred on fostering a deep relationship with Jesus and the Church he founded. This journey takes place through distinct stages over a period of time. The purpose of the Rite is not solely to impart knowledge but to bring about communion with Jesus Christ; having an impact on not just the head but on every part of our life.
“The definitive aim of catechesis is to put people not only in touch but in communion, in intimacy, with Jesus Christ: Only He can lead us to the love of the Father in the Spirit and make us share in the life of the Holy Trinity.” On Catechesis in Our Time, 5
The RCIA rite finds its roots in the powerful method used to bring early converts into the Church. The Early Church journeyed alongside people and showed them God present in our midst. RCIA at St Benedict’s sets out to do the same thing with our excellent team of volunteer catechists and helpers.
The Rite of Christian Initiation Journey
The RCIA rite is not a time-defined process. Rather, it is focused on the spiritual journey and readiness. It may take a short period of time or a number of years. The most important thing is to enter wholeheartedly and be ready for the next period. Each period finishes with a Rite where the individual proclaims as true what he/she has heard and commits to the next period.
Period 1
Enquiry/
Evangelisation
This initial period allows the enquirer to become acquainted with the Catholic Church. You hear the Good News of Jesus Christ and reflect on your own life and stirrings of the heart. There is also the opportunity to ask questions.
Rite of Acceptance and Welcome
During this simple Rite, you are welcomed by the Christian community.
Period 2
Catechumenate
The individual is now called a catechumen; one who receives deeper instruction, leading to conversion. There is an overview of Catholicism and a deepening prayer life.
Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion
During this Rite, you hear aloud your call by God to prepare at an ever deepening level.
Period 3
Purification and Enlightenment
A time of prayer and conversion when you continue to learn to turn away from sin and choose God and the life of the Gospel.
Rites of Christian Initiation
You will be initiated into the life of God and his family, the Church. This is through the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.
Period 4
Mystagogy
After Christian initiation is completed, the journey doesn’t stop, it continues. This is a period of deepening your understanding and the experience of your new faith. The focus is on developing your own personal spiritual life and a discernment of your calling and involvement in the Mission of the Church.
