The Cross

Welcome to page about The Cross.

Here you will learn about why the Cross is such an important part of our Faith. Keep reading on to discover about it and for an activity at the end.

Why is the Cross important?

The Cross is important because it reminds us of the Sacrifice that Jesus made for us.

Why did Jesus die on the Cross?

Jesus died on the Cross so that He would take the discipline for our sins, so we could be forgiven and live closely to God again.

Why do we have Crosses at home and in Church?

We have Crosses at home and in our Churches because it is a reminder of the sacrifice that Jesus gave his life for us. This is something we never want to forget.

Why do we make the sign of the Cross?

The sign of the Cross is a prayer in itself. We make this gesture as a sign that we remember that we belong to God- the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit

“In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen”

The Kerygma

The word ‘Kerygma’ means Good News. Do you know what the Good News is?

Read the story below of the Kerygma and see if you are able to figure out what it is.

God created many things in our life today. He created the plants that we see, the animals we care for, the land we walk on, the sea we can swim and sail on. Can you think of anything else that God created?

He created the first humans, Adam and Eve.

He created YOU!

We can see from this that God created everything and everything in the world was perfect. But then something happened.

Adam and Eve turned their backs to God. They did this by choosing not to listen to God, but listen to the snake who was telling them to eat from a forbidden tree.

What do we call it when we go against God?

Sin.

Adam and Eve sinned against God, and this is how sin came into the world.

Because Adam and Eve sinned against God, it meant that their relationship with God was weakened. It wasn’t as strong as it was before.

Adam and Eve turned away from God.

God loves us so much that he wanted to repair the relationship between us and Him.

So, God sent someone to Earth,  can you guess who?

Jesus.

God sent Jesus to earth to help repair our relationship between us and God.

He did this by dying on the cross for us.

Activity

Using the story we just read, can you put these events in order? Get some paper and see how much you can remember. Check the answers below using the ‘Answer’ button.

The Fall – Sin comes between me and God.

Salvation – Jesus invites us to trust in Him and to turn away from sin.

Redemption – Jesus strengthens our relationship with God again through his Life, Death and Resurrection.

Creation – God loves me and created us and the whole world.

The Recreation – Jesus poured the Holy Spirit into our hearts to bring us new life in the Church.

The Kerygma and the Cross

The story reminds us what Jesus sacrificed for us. The Cross that Jesus died on reminds us of this very sacrifice, that Jesus died for us so that we didn’t have to live in sin anymore.

Below is an activity for you to decorate your own cross. Print out the sheet to make your own Cross and put it up somewhere in your house!
